Marriage

Marriage, in the secular world, is the legal contract whereby a man and woman promise to live together and share all that they have for life.

Marriage, within the church, is similar but has a spiritual dimension to it too.

The couple entering into the marriage are publicly making vows to one another in the sight of God. They promise to love one another in any situation that may arise in their lives together.

Since love is a gift from God, Bible passages are read and the service is one of celebration as people prepare to continue their life journeys together.

The Church of England sees marriage as the secure environment for companionship, a sexual relationship and the nurture of children.

If you are interested in finding out more about marriage, or the marriage service, your local church will be able to help you.

You can also find more information on the Church of England main site. Information resources on 'How to get married in church' are being developed and will be at the link in this section shortly.

Remarriage

It is understood, both inside and outside the church, that even with the best intentions in the world, not all marriages do last the whole of the couple’s natural lifespan. Divorce and remarriage are issues that need to be dealt with carefully.

In the Church of England it is still possible to remarry after divorce, depending on the circumstances of the ending of the first marriage. If you are seeking to remarry after a divorce you should contact your local vicar who will explore it with you.
