The Revd Andrew Wheeler joins MEPD as the World Mission Adviser, after a quarter of a century of mission service in Eastern Africa.
He and his wife Sue have worked as CMS mission partners in Sudan, Egypt and Kenya, mainly in support of the Sudanese Church, in Sudan or exile.
Andrew's work has mainly been in various forms of theological education. He has maintained a special interest in distance learning methodologies. Latterly, he was involved in a major research and writing project on the history and experience of the Sudanese Church.
Andrew, Sue and their two children left East Africa in 2000. For a year, he worked at Lambeth Palace as the Archbishop's Secretary for Anglican Communion Affairs. Since 2002, he has been Mission Pastor at St Saviour's Church in the centre of Guildford, and since 2006, World Mission Advisor for the Diocese of Guildford. He is a Canon of All Saints Cathedral in Cairo.
Apart from being available to advise and assist the Bishop in world mission matters, Andrew's role enables him to offer guidance, support and encouragement in the following areas:
- The nurture of relationships with the Diocesan links in Nigeria, Evry, France (Link Officer: Canon Charles Stewart) and Viborg, Denmark (Link Officer: Tony Hennessey-Brown )
- Advice on the development of other mission links and partnerships.
- Advice for individuals on mission opportunities and mission vocation.
- Preaching and contributing to Mission Sundays and other special events in parish churches.
- Seminars and workshops on mission themes.
