Reverend John Strain is no stranger to workplaces of every kind. He has worked in ships and submarines, in schools and universities, for big IT companies and for tiny businesses, for governments and for charities. He is the newly appointed Adviser for Work, Economy and Business, an ecumenical post based in the Department for Social Responsibility (DSR). He is an author and lecturer in ethics at Surrey University with a passion for exploring what having a faith means in the workplace and in the economy.

“Economies are not secular inventions”, John says. “Economy is a very biblical word about God’s relationship with us and with creation.” One of John’s key aims is to support local churches in their engagement with work and the economy at this time of great anxiety. There are, John believes, grounds for great confidence, in what binds Christians together, in their understanding of work. What binds Christians together in these matters is also very often what binds them together with people of different faiths.

John would like to meet with groups of people in local faith communities to learn more about what matters to them. If you have any queries or ideas for John, don’t hesitate to contact him.
